ISO 9001:2026 is published. Existing certificates remain valid through the transition window. The most important horizon is not the deadline, it is the first 90 days.
ISO 9001:2026 is officially published. After nearly a decade under the 2015 edition, the world's most-used quality management standard has been revised. IAF guidance on the formal transition deadline is expected shortly, with a three-year window expected.
What is not changing matters as much as what is. Existing ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid. The process approach, the High-Level Structure, the seven quality management principles, customer focus and continual improvement all remain. Existing QMS investments are not at risk.
What is changing is the level of specificity in six particular areas, the six themes the Quality Ready campaign has been walking through this summer. All six now sit in a published standard, not a draft.
The Six Themes at a Glance
Every theme covered in the Quality Ready series so far is now anchored in the published standard:
Climate change becomes a context question (4.1, 4.2). The clause requires a documented determination, not a climate strategy.
Interested-party requirements get a filtering step (4.2). Static matrices from 2018 will read as thin at your next audit.
Quality culture and ethics enter the standard (5.1.1, 7.3). Auditors will look at how leadership shapes decisions, not what the policy says.
Risk and opportunity get separate treatment (6.1 splits into three). Most existing risk registers will need an opportunity twin with its own owners and effectiveness measures.
Change management closes the loop (6.3, 8.2.1, 8.2.4). Five steps: plan, resource, communicate, monitor, review. Each with its own audit-visible artifact.
Knowledge, awareness and modern work catch up (7.1.3, 7.1.6, 7.3, 8.3). Infrastructure is now explicitly physical, virtual or hybrid. Awareness moves from policy to behavior.
None of these are dramatic on their own. Together they sharpen what your QMS needs to show at your next surveillance audit.

For every certified organization, the first surveillance or recertification audit that falls under the revised standard becomes the practical deadline that matters, often earlier than the formal transition deadline.
For most organizations running annual surveillance audits, that first revised-standard audit will land within 18 to 24 months. Working backward from that audit is what makes the first 90 days horizon so important.
