Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

ESD can cause numerous problems for organizations across sectors, not only the electronics industry. Product quality and reliability, manufacturing costs and production can all be affected by ESD. Associated costs can range from a few cents to several hundred dollars.

ANSI/ESD S20.20

The ANSI/ESD S20.20 standard was created to help organizations design, develop, implement and maintain an ESD control program. Global companies can seek to become certified to both ANSI/ESD S20.20 and to IEC61340-5-1.

Meeting the standard protects electrical or electronic parts, assemblies and equipment susceptible to ESD damage from Human Body Model (HBM) discharges greater than or equal to 100 volts. The standard affects any organization handling products with unprotected ESD sensitive (ESDS) parts, including microcircuits, discrete semiconductors, thick and thin film resistors, hybrid devices, printed circuit boards and piezoelectric crystals.

Adoption of the standards illustrates a commitment to safety and quality. Benefits can include:

ABS Quality Evaluations (ABS QE) can help you achieve certification to the ANSI/ESD S20.20 standard and reduce losses due to ESD and static electricity. By meeting ANSI requirements, your organization illustrates its focus on quality, productivity and customer satisfaction while keeping personnel safe.
